Goodlife’s group buying statistics for May have been released (click here for our April write-up), and Taiwan’s overall group buying market has grown 5.2% over the previous month to over NT$230 million (~$8 million US) for the month.

Groupon continues to lead the pack, accounting for 46.6% of the total sales in May, compared to 45% in April. It saw a steady sales growth of 8.9% over April, which may have been at runner-up Gomaji’s expense. Gomaji’s business in May fell 40%, but despite their sharp drop in month-over-month sales, still managed to maintain a second place position in terms of total market share. May also saw a new entrant to the market: Yahoo discounts. Yahoo entered the ecosystem with a splash, finishing the month in fifth by market share, with $16 million NT in sales.
While a 5.2% growth is impressive, it is still a slowdown compared to April’s growth which saw a month-over-month growth of 16.5%. Each of the top 4 market leaders had a top deal of the month:
- Groupon – A one night, two meal Kenting bed-and-breakfast stay in European-style villas. Originally 6000 NT, 3000 stays were booked at 2000 NT a piece for a total of 6 million NT
- 17Life – 200 NT worth of CoCo tea for 75 NT, 56868 were purchased (that’s a lot of tea) for a total of 4.27 million NT
- Gomaji – A one night luxury bed-and-breakfast in Yonghe, originally 4300 NT, 2446 stays were booked at 1399 NT for a total of 3.43 million NT
- Yahoo – a 9 inch Domino’s pizza and 2 cans of pepsi, originally 440 NT, on sale for 168 NT. 19,892 were ordered for a total of 3.35 million NT.
As the graph below shows, Taipei is still the largest market overall, but of the larger markets, Taichung has had the highest growth in the past three months. We look forward to next month’s statistics to see how things compare, and if the growth slowdown continues.
