Two weeks ago we featured an interview with Groupon Taiwan’s COO Andy Kuo in which he indicated a high degree of optimism regarding his company’s future in Taiwan. In a report released last week by Taiwan’s goodlife.tw, it turns out Kuo’s optimism was well-founded: Groupon sits atop April’s leaderboard for group buying sales in Taiwan.

The report found that Groupon is grabbing an increasingly large slice of an increasingly large pie: Groupon’s market share rose to 45% from 43.8%, while the entire Groupbuying market grew 16.5% (in terms of sales).
Goodlife also identified the three most successful deals in terms of sales:
- Gomaji – NT$13 million (~US $430k): Leader Hotel romantic getaway package (1 night, 3 meals)
- Groupon – NT$3.84 million (~US $128k): buy-one-get-one-free Coldstone ice cream
- Gomaji – NT$3.64 million (~US $121k): overnight hot springs package at World Hot Springs
Taipei and Taichung took the lead in terms of group buying offers purchased. Top five ranked by region:
- Taipei
- Taichung
- Kaohsiung
- Tainan
- Taoyuan
Dining and spas took the top two spots in terms of offer categories. The top five:
Dining- Spas
- Other
- Afternoon tea and desserts
- Bulk-order goods sent directly to the purchaser (宅配商品)
It should be noted that Gomaji’s April growth seemed to be even bigger than Groupon’s. It will be interesting to see if the May statistics continue that trend.
